Powerhouse Hobbs is reportedly set to depart All Elite Wrestling (AEW), with expectations growing that the former TNT Champion will soon make the move to WWE.
According to Fightful Select, Hobbs’ AEW contract is “set to expire at midnight,” and the powerhouse star has likely wrestled his final match for the promotion. Sean Ross Sapp reports that Hobbs finished up with AEW at the Collision tapings following Dynamite, bringing his run with the company to a close.
AEW Exit and Contract Situation
Hobbs, who joined AEW in 2020, is said to be contractually eligible to join WWE as of this week. Negotiations between Hobbs and AEW had reportedly been ongoing for several months, with the company making what was described as a “huge” and “substantial” offer to keep him.
Despite the strong proposal and the fact that Hobbs is believed to be leaving on good terms, the report states that he ultimately wanted to “test the waters” and explore new opportunities beyond AEW.
WWE Interest Grows
WWE has reportedly shown interest in Hobbs for quite some time, and sources within the company told Fightful Select that he is expected to sign, “barring some huge unforeseen change.”
While rumours of a potential WWE move surfaced months ago, the report clarifies that no direct contact had taken place at that stage. WWE’s interest in Hobbs dates back several years, including during the period when Dan Ventrelle was overseeing talent relations, although Hobbs ultimately remained with AEW at the time.
Powerhouse Hobbs’ AEW Career
Real name Will Hobson, Powerhouse Hobbs rose to prominence as a member of Team Taz, alongside Ricky Starks, Brian Cage and Hook. He enjoyed a standout singles run, capturing the AEW TNT Championship in a Falls Count Anywhere match on the March 8, 2023 episode of Dynamite.
Known for his explosive, hard-hitting style, Hobbs made the World’s Most Dangerous Slam and a devastating spinebuster his signature finishing moves. In the latter stages of his AEW run, he was also part of the Don Callis Family and held the AEW World Trios Championship.
What’s Next?
If Hobbs officially joins WWE, he would follow in the footsteps of several former AEW stars who have crossed over, including Cody Rhodes, Jade Cargill, Shawn Spears and Ethan Page.
