Michael Carrick enjoyed the perfect start to his second spell as Manchester United caretaker manager as second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu dealt a major blow to Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes at a revitalised Old Trafford.
After weeks of frustration, United delivered a performance that reignited belief among supporters, with Sir Alex Ferguson applauding from the stands and fans sarcastically waving goodbye to Erling Haaland when the City striker was substituted with 10 minutes remaining.
Donnarumma Keeps City Alive – Until United Strike
City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was instrumental in keeping the visitors level during the first half, producing a series of outstanding saves to deny Dorgu, Amad Diallo, Casemiro and Mbeumo.
However, the Italian could do nothing to stop United’s breakthrough just after the interval. Bruno Fernandes, leading by example as captain, launched a swift counter-attack before releasing Mbeumo, who calmly finished from the left on his return from Africa Cup of Nations duty.
Dorgu Seals Victory as City Falter
United doubled their advantage 11 minutes later when City defender Rico Lewis was caught flat-footed, allowing Patrick Dorgu to dart in and convert Matheus Cunha’s low cut-back.
The hosts had three goals ruled out for offside, while Diallo struck the post late on, but City offered little response. Haaland, now with just one goal in seven matches, was unable to inspire a comeback as Guardiola’s side struggled for momentum.
Title Implications and United Revival
As United fans paid tribute to Carrick at full-time, Pep Guardiola cut a dejected figure on the touchline. City’s four-game winless run in the Premier League opens the door for Arsenal to tighten their grip on the title race.
United briefly climb to fourth place, a position they failed to reach consistently under Ruben Amorim, giving Carrick and his new coaching staff plenty to celebrate after a statement victory in the Manchester derby.
